question about duplication

I have an application completed and running on heroku. I want to make a copy of it, make some new customizations and push it up to heroku as a new app with a new name. I'm wondering where I start in the process, because I don't think I would be going through the initial steps of "rails new etsydemo" etc would I ?

The easiest approach would be to use GitHub to duplicate your app. Take a look at the 'git clone' command: https://www.atlassian.com/git/tutorials/setting-up-a-repository/git-clone/.

If I'm afraid of that, because I don't have a video to follow along, would it look like this? I've made a copy on my desktop, I've renamed it. Now can I make changes without screwing the original one up? And then can I create a new repository on github, save it to there, and push it to heroku under a different web address without screwing up the original? Thanks!

Yes, that's exactly right. By doing it this way, your two apps have 1) separate folders on your computer and 2) separate Git/GitHub/Heroku configurations, so they'll be operating completely independently.

Okay so I've done all the above. I now see the new application live on internet and on github and on heroku. But now I am getting the following message when trying to view the original one There is no app configured at that hostname.
Perhaps the app owner has renamed it, or you mistyped the URL.

I'm not sure what you did to change the configuration of your original app. If you check your GitHub and Heroku accounts, you should now see two different apps there. I'm not sure I'll be able to help much more without knowing the steps you made and/or seeing the error message, screenshots and commands you've been running.
