What are good methods to go about getting funding as a startup?

I've heard of going to networking events and asking people to be your mentor, and you show them your progress, giving them the confidence to invest in you later on. Are there other paths people tend to go down?

These networking events can be the starting point for relationships that you build with potential investors. If you're actively trying to get funding, you should take advantage of opportunities to get more exposure to investors. For example, you could present at angel investor meetings, attend business plan competitions, or set up an online profile on https://angel.co/. Fundraising often becomes a full-time job for a couple months for CEOs.

But whether you're raising money from friends and family, seeking angel investments, or VC money, the most important aspect is to establish credibility. Like Joseph said, ideas alone are never enough. You'll usually need to show at least one of the following: 1) you've talked to potential customers and validated demand 2) you've built a proof-of-concept 3) you have market traction.

Jeehoo, are you currently looking to fundraise?

Not presently, but definitely in the future. It's some info that I realized I'm better off knowing now.

In my opinion networking is great and you can never go wrong in that..but if you really want funding for your start up your focus should at the beginning be on what are you going to build, what problem does it solve and Most importantly how are you going to execute your idea into a success not getting way ahead of yourself by raising capital and not dealing with those key issues first..ideas are a dime a dozen steps and action you take and execution is key to a startups success..and experienced entrepreneur will tell you that..the key is focus on the process not the results if you focus on all those key things then getting funding will not be so difficult because investors will see you are not a novice entrepreneur..you thought about and dealt with the tough question they will ask you..you know the answer and hopefully you have gotten some progress to support your general idea/startup..to show you are going in the right direction and solving the right problem/need.The key is not to pull for investors but attract them through what you have done and not said..
